Epic Eighth Anniversary Trip!

Disclaimer:  This is a long post with a lot of pretty amazing pictures.  Prepare to spend some time!

I can hardly believe it has been 8 years ago when I convinced my beloved to "just get married!"  We semi-eloped to a friend's place who had the most beautiful grounds, and asked our closest family to join us while we said our vows and pledged each to the other.  It was the most special day!
Little did I know what was ahead!

For the traditionalists, we did go through the formal ceremony in July when we had set a formal date.  It was also beautiful, but in retrospect, the first was the all we needed (though it was fun to wear a fancy dress!).

Every year, we try to celebrate our anniversary by doing something fun and usually outdoors.  This year was a take 2 on getting a storage barrel to our bear camp up in the mountains and to do a spring black bear hunt.  We had tried the week before but kept loosing our trail in the snow and getting our feet snowed in.  We had high hopes that the snow would be much less.  It was, for a while.  We trudged our way through drifts of snow, winding back and forth to and from the trail.  I can't adequately describe how fabulous this was.  *Sarcasm!*  Then we hit this:
Fortunately, my loving husband chose this moment to suggest we bail.  I had been trying to think positively while tromping through muck, mud, & snow while tripping and sometimes falling through the snow and over hidden branches into running water below.  Finally, I was just trying to be quiet.  "If you don't have something nice to say..."  Yeah, I was not going to be saying anything nice!  My husband became my hero when he said we should just quit.  Then he really pulled out the stops when he produced a tiny bottle of wine to drink with our cheese!  It was very fun!  Suddenly, I had no problem thinking positively!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, he suggested we go down and head to Seward to take a Kenai Fjord tour!  This is something I have been asking to do for years but the interest just hadn't waxed as much for Pat.  I was so excited and I think he was too!  We promptly finished our lunch and made our way to Seward.  We had no bedding and were wearing matching camo clothing, so I suggested we try a thrift store to remedy both situations.  We found a lovely comforter and pillows with bed mats for cushions, and I did find a nice sweater to add to the old pair of jeans I had in the car.  Crisis averted!  Since I had "new" duds, we also hit the town and saw a movie!  It was quite possibly the most interesting movie theatre I've ever been in.  It had fascinating decor, and  I was a bit in awe of the Christmas lights around the curtained screen.  I wish I would have had my camera as it was somewhat indescribably, well, quaint!  We had a rather cool night camping in the car (we did use the automatic start to warm it up a time or two!), and made it to our dock at the appointed time.  I was very excited!  Pat looked a tiny bit tired, but he was excited, too!
From our second deck window seat, we had a great vantage point to see the first of many wildlife sightings.  The first was the Sea Otter.  There were many who were just reclining in the midday sun.
Then came the Dall Porpoise.  We called them the Killer Dolphins.  They have coloring like the Killer Whale but are porpoise and like to play in the boat's wake.  They chased us a couple of times, but we remained safe!

(O.K., this wasn't my photo, but I thought I should show you what was splashing in the photo previous to this!)
We did come upon a couple pods of Orca's, the Killer Whale.  There were several young and female with one larger male.  It was quite obvious to tell the difference!  I kept waiting for our deckhands to lean over the deck with a fish hanging from their teeth, but I suppose these guys haven't learned those tricks just yet.  It was pretty spectacular to see them for "real!"

We were having a ball running back and forth from our cozy table inside to the upper deck to see more.  It was a little breezy up there, and the wind made it a bit chilly, so we chose not to stay outside for too long of intervals.
We were approaching this glacier, Holgate Glacier to be precise, and this other tour boat was ahead of us.  I thought it was good to give perspective!  We followed suit and slowly advanced on the slightly calving wall of packed snow/ice.  I had never heard the calving before, and it was truly thunderous.  We only saw smaller pieces fall and it was booming, so I can only imagine what a huge chunk would sound like.

True to form, Pat was on the lookout for bears and found 4 black bears crawling around near the glacier.  We also saw many mountain goats with cute little babies, but the real draw for Pat were the bears.  He is, at this moment (in the photo and in present tense), planning his next bear hunt, since this one proved to be a bit different!
The Orca's abound!  This is one of the male leaders of one of the pods.  They were fascinating.
The whales are what I was most excited to see, since we've seen all the other animals before.  After seeing all the Killer Whales, we began to have sightings of Humpback Whales!  They were either solitary or in a pair, and it was extraordinary to see them!  The captain of the boat would get as close as we safely could, then turn off the main engine to achieve as much quiet as possible.   You could hear them blow out as they surfaced and then slid back down.  Everyone on the boat would gasp with excitement with each fluke.  It was amazing!

Spectacular!  I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Sunday, worshiping in creation!
We did come back pretty tired.  It seems that even our dogs were exhausted and we all just crashed with pleasant, peaceful rest!  That was truly the best bear hunt on which I've ever been, and one of the most memorable anniversaries yet!

Greening Up

It was between a writing update or photo and I chose photos.  You can see where we've (by we I mean Pat) redone the deck and how the we've tried to relax with a canoe trip on the lake (yes it was for a photo shoot for the house blog)!  I know I'm slacking, but it's been very busy with deck projects, photo shoots, Bible studies, work, showings, finding lots, saying goodbye to friends (boo), and more.  When things settle down a bit, I'll try to catch up!

The dogs have really taken to reclining.

Notice Bella doesn't even move towards the sliced strawberries covered in whipped cream.  So well trained.

"Summer"

I don't have time to post pictures just yet, as I'm trying to just get an updated post in here, but I do believe this week that "summer" has arrived!

I put this in quotes because our lake is still pretty frozen.  There are a few places that the migratory ducks have discovered to drink and pull grass, but the vast majority is quite solid.  I'm not so brave to do my walks across, and  the dogs have certainly put on the brakes when it comes to the edge of our water, but the mornings still look pretty frozen out there.  The snow is mostly gone except on the north side of our house where the roof slide creates the cement snow that takes an eternity to melt.

So why "summer?"  Well, this weekend was insanely busy, not a dull moment, projects going and places to go with friends, and I got a sunburn.  Yep, I did!  My nose is all rosy and it's not from being out in the cold.  I helped a friend and participated in her garage sale this weekend.  The projected forecast was clouds and some rain, but we had sunshine off and on Friday and in all it's glory on Saturday!  I positioned myself to sit in the sun all day Saturday, without sunscreen, and paid for it.  If you've ever spent a winter in Alaska, much less five, you'll understand it was well worth it.  My face itched from the tightness and dryness all day yesterday, but the Vitamin D was my lifeblood!

Besides the burn, the busyness is a stamp of summer.  The garage sale was busy and pretty successful, Pat's getting the deck done (the floor is complete!), we had 2.5 showings this weekend so the cleaning has been insane, we celebrated the new job of a friend who is now going to be moving away (boo!), we had church, grocery shopping, errands, etc.  The winters up here are slow and you do feel like hibernating, but now the sun is up early and you don't mind!  It goes down late and you have to force yourself to stop and go to bed.  The stars are gone til fall, and I'm actually not too sad about it.  I'm ready to get going, forgo some sleep, and enjoy this summer!  I think I'll put on sunscreen, though!

Under & Over Construction

It's been a tough weekend.  I had the day off on Friday, so after I helped a friend trim some kiddo's bangs, I stopped at a couple garage sales.  I did find this lovely rocking chair for a bargain along with my required books, and had to immediately try it out on our rapidly changing porch.  The dogs were in complete agreement with my choice of afternoon amusement.

Pat, on the other hand, has been laboriously improving our deck.  This is the back deck and rails.  It is so pretty!  He's been doing a fantastic job and it looks so fancy, though he's remained his frugal self!

The above photo shows the tree stump that remains of a large birch tree that we had to cut down before we built the garage.  A friend of Pat's has this loader thing that clawed the partially frozen earth away from the stump and proceeded to lift it out of it's clutch.  It left a large hole that was quickly filled in with pit-run.  This dirt/sand/gravel/rock/boulder mix is a bit difficult to haul with shovel and wheelbarrow.  The entire back side of my body is telling me so.  I kept up pretty well with Pat as we built up the dirt lines around the house and under the deck.  I'm excited to see the finished look and that is a good thing, since that is what gives me motivation to help!!
The fun part was when in the middle of this, we had a stop-by showing!  A lovely couple stopped and took a look.  It was a bit crazy, but it seemed they understood our lack of show-prep!  Today we had another showing and I had to scramble before church to clean up.  I think we need to be better prepared!

Of Crisco and Moose

I have never in my recollection completely emptied an entire container of Crisco.  It seems my weekly chocolate chip cookie baking is whittling away the supply.  I have to credit Evelyn Hughes for her recipe in the River Cookbook for the copious use of shortening.  Pat is quite the happy man with his weekly supply of cookies, but after the other night of having eaten a large amount for supper, he's decided that moderation is the key to a happy digestive system.

Just the other morning while drinking my coffee, I looked out to see this momma.  How can I tell, you ask? (Well, even if you didn't, I'm going to tell you.)  A moose at this time of year is usually very slim.  This one is nowhere near slim.  I'm not trying to be politically incorrect, but I had to tell her, "You Huge!"!!!

Pushing too Hard?

We've been a little bit on busy side with home improvement projects.  In fact, it seems to have had an effect on Pat.  He went out and successfully shot a can to death.  He was proud and I took a photo of his "kill" but I have to admit, I was a little concerned.  He didn't help my anxieties by recently pulling his overalls on backward.  I know we all pull our pants on one leg at a time, but they are usually in the same direction.  I think the home improvement push has been a bit strained.
On that note, we have had a couple calls regarding our house, and one sounds like there may be potential interest.  We know from our past experience of 150 showings with no buyer not to hold our breath, but it is encouraging to know it's being seen.  Speaking of being seen, we took our profile off for now and if you'd like to see our house blog, it's here.  If you have any suggestions, let me know on this blog or email or facebook.  I try to check these things out on occasion!

Where I've Been

I have not been avoiding you.  I promise.
I have been extremely busy with our NEED LESS PROJECT and getting our house up on the market.
The cleaning up and cleaning out is simply endless and it makes me almost glad to keep my moving every 3 years streak alive!  Just imagine the clutter I'd collect if I stayed in one place for too long!  Yes, you are right, it's mostly my husband who is the "collector," but I thought I'd try to share blame!

The house is now listed on Craigslist and Alaskalist and I've started a blog to post more information and pictures at 47130autumnroad.blogspot.com.  It is coming along and we've had an interested party call inquiring more.  They are from California, so not being able to come by is a hindrance to them and thus requires me to send more.  I'm perfectly fine with that!  I'm rather excited as a matter of fact!  I just wish I didn't have this pesky job thing to go to so I could devote my time to gathering and sending information!!  Oh, well.  The joys of selling.

We have both been extremely motivated to finish projects and create new ones on our house.  It has been fascinating to see how God has been providing funds to do so.  I don't imagine He's doing this to help us live in a home that is nicer.  I'm sure it is because He will sell it soon!  I doubt He feels any necessity in a stainless dishwasher over a white one, especially since it doesn't even work as well, but He provided it!  Our next big project will be to redo the deck and since the snow is beginning to melt, we should be able to kick that off in a week or two, barring any future snow dumps.  We still have some tweaking to do on the house and are contemplating putting in new cabinets/counter for the kitchen, but not too sure about that one just yet.  I know HGTV recommends it, but if we can sell it without, we will!  We'd have to raise our price if we do too much renovation!  Shucks!

I just thought I'd give an update on where I've been and where I'll likely be for a short bit.  I will try to keep updated!  Thanks for all the encouragements!

Rate my Room #2: Master Bedroom

This is the view when you open the door to our bedroom. (the curtains are not on fire, it just looks like it!) The king size bed fits comfortably in this position with the dresser just on the right outside the above picture. The walls are a chocolate brown, and though it's dark, the carpet is light, the ceiling is light, as is the bedding/window treatments. Below you can see the big dark wall. It is the one wall that has no windows/doors on it and it does seem blank. I have ideas of a large scale artwork piece that we may get around to, but I'm up for suggestions.

This picture shows the wall of mirrored closet doors. Nice, I know. I can sense your jealousy. One thing they do, is make the room feel bigger and lighter. The center cabinets provide nice storage, so I can't complain. Way back here, we had a queen bed positioned along the big blank wall. The dresser would have to be moved to a wall near the closets to fit, but would this look better? My vote is yes, Pat's vote is leave it alone! I don't blame him: this bed is huge and HEAVY! What do you think of this room?

"Rate My Space" sort-of

I've now experienced the phenomenon of pictures not being able to be moved. Never happened to me before. Fortunately, it doesn't matter too much on this post.

As you are aware, we are prepping our home for sale in the NEED LESS PROJECT. Sadly, this is the only room that I can even take a picture of that is almost finished! I want to know (I think) what you think. I may or may not take suggestions based on our time and money restraints.

This is our tiniest spare room in our loft/upstairs. It is extremely small, but I've tried to lay it out in a roomy way. We painted and removed the daybed frame, setting the bed on the frame on the floor. Just so you know, we are planning on replacing the window, and it's trim, so don't think we don't see it! I've thought of painting the dresser, but that is actually a lot of work and I don't want to do it. Yet, anyway. Suggest away and let me know what you think! (If you remember, this was the "for sell" picture earlier!)

Oregon Beauty

Seriously breathtaking.
Pat's trip to Oregon yielded him with some incredible sights. I have been remiss in sharing them with you sooner. My apologies!
In his immense consideration, Pat took these solely with me in mind! He knows I have a weakness for fascinating conifers and He didn't disappoint! I only wish I could have been there to see the weepers in person. Someday...!

Pat's eye for the uncommon is superb. I love his interest in how God creates the one-sided tree with the winds at just the right times.
The Oregon Coast seems to be a place of inspiration! I love how I can see his thoughts, even when I am not with him.
All I can think is, "GOONIES!"
The Oregon forests are dripping with greenery. It is so rich in diverse shades and textures. I can just smell the damp, rich earth and hear the the rush of the water through the rocks and over the falls. Someday...!

If you hadn't noticed, Pat's friend is at the base of one of these trees. It gives a bit of perspective, doesn't it? Below, this un-doctored photo shows an amazing glimpse of a chartreuse moss growing on the rocks. A wonderment!

Breathtaking.
