Goin' on a Bear Hunt...

Just before Pat left on his bear hunt, he took Marc out to shoot his .340 Weatherby.  For fun, they filled an old juice jug with colored water and Marc took it down.

So Dave and Pat made use of the rare 2' seas to take the skiff across the inlet and into their river of choice.  They found a nice sandbar on which to make camp, but it was a little way from where the boat landed!

Unfortunately, the bears were not showing themselves in this particular place, so they changed locations and had much the same luck.

Instead they were forced to sleep in, relax, take naps, etc.  Boy, bear hunting is tough.

Excessive June Photos!

O.K., here goes:  June in one post! I have a lofty goal!
June included a visit from Mom.  One of our "must-do's" is to go to Homer.  On the way down, we just had to stop and check out this Bald Eagle in it's nest.  Pretty cool.  On our way home, we stopped in Ninilchik (nin-IL'-chick) to visit the old Russian Orthodox Church.  I was sad it was closed, but the surrounding cemetery was fascinating.

We took Mom out one evening to go camping.  We drove to a campground, but then began to walk down a trail to another spot.  We walked about a half mile, much to Mom's confusion, and came upon this cabin.  Then we surprised her and told her THIS was our spot!!  Pat went back, loaded up the boat that was at the camp, and loaded all our gear to bring back.  Mom and Pat went out fishing that evening!  I don't think they had any bites, but it was a lovely evening for cast-practice!

 Then we had s'mores!  Yummy!
It was a little breezy outside so used the "inside fire" to roast the marshmallows!

We did take a nice hike along the lakeside trail.  Rowdy loved it, and it was a lovely hike!

Mom and I also went out to the beach.  It was a pretty blustery day, and high tide, so we didn't spend all day there but just enough to get some fresh salt air, pick up a few pretty rocks, and get our feet wet!!

(only one of us was wearing water-proof foot-wear!)

While Mom and I were having fun, Pat was working hard.  The fence section above is the "security fence" that he had to install.  That panel is the entirety of the fence in that area.  Pretty secure, huh?!
The 2nd weekend of June was the Kenai River Festival in Soldotna.  Teakell Design had a booth and we had an enjoyable time at the festival.  We also did pretty well in sales and orders.  It was well worth our time and investment.

The River Festival was literally right beside the Kenai River (naturally), so Mom took a quick pic of the world famous waters!
Just the other day, this robin adolescent perched itself on my deck and seemed to be demanding something from me.  Unfortunately, I do not speak chirp and was unable to assist it at this time.

On June 21st, the Summer Solstice, Pat helped a buddy out by playing drums in his band.  The Free Beer Band played last, and though that's not an ideal time slot (around midnight here), we were able to sit through the bands before us! (insert mass amounts of sarcasm here)  The Funny River Backwoods Group was the band just before Pat's and the name is very applicable.  Sadly, they sounded like a 5th grade band that just learned to play their fiddle, mandolin, guitar and washboard.  Oh, and they were all flying pretty high!  Anywho...Pat's group did pretty well and the few people who were still left enjoyed some nice parting music!
 Joy is fresh cherry tomatoes!
Did we mention, our house is still for sale?  All the fabulous activities could be yours!

Oregon Beauty

Seriously breathtaking.
Pat's trip to Oregon yielded him with some incredible sights. I have been remiss in sharing them with you sooner. My apologies!
In his immense consideration, Pat took these solely with me in mind! He knows I have a weakness for fascinating conifers and He didn't disappoint! I only wish I could have been there to see the weepers in person. Someday...!

Pat's eye for the uncommon is superb. I love his interest in how God creates the one-sided tree with the winds at just the right times.
The Oregon Coast seems to be a place of inspiration! I love how I can see his thoughts, even when I am not with him.
All I can think is, "GOONIES!"
The Oregon forests are dripping with greenery. It is so rich in diverse shades and textures. I can just smell the damp, rich earth and hear the the rush of the water through the rocks and over the falls. Someday...!

If you hadn't noticed, Pat's friend is at the base of one of these trees. It gives a bit of perspective, doesn't it? Below, this un-doctored photo shows an amazing glimpse of a chartreuse moss growing on the rocks. A wonderment!

Breathtaking.

Randomness!

We were driving home from something recently, I forget what, and we cruise past an open area in our neighborhood to find this fascinating sight. It was one of those double-take moments and we just had to back up and look again. At that moment, we did not have a camera; however, we were undeterred in procuring a photograph. We sped home, I ran into the house (not literally) and grabbed the camera, ran back out to the car, and sped back to the oreo moose who was still at her post. We stared at her for quite some time and Pat got out to get a closer view. She seemed preoccupied with what we figured was another moose cow and calf in the area that we had seen taking a sip from an outdoor pool (a moose-bath, as opposed to a birdbath, if you will, or won't, whatever). We are still unsure of why this stripe is down only one side of her, but she was quite a sight for us.

On a "high" note...
Pat installed the ceiling fan that we have had for 6 months or so. I did not envy this job, so I never nagged for it to be completed. I came home the other day to find my fearless man up on a ladder upon the scaffolding of death. I was unwilling to try it out, though the back of my legs felt like they were waking up from being completely asleep: that needle-sting-tingle feeling. Yeah, go ahead and laugh. I can so relate to my mom. I hate heights. And ladders/scaffolding of death. Fortunately, my fabulous husband completed the task and did a perfect job of concealing the wires and it works marvelously. We are looking forward to having a sauna-less loft this winter, and it looks very nice.

Our recent walk on the beach made us feel a bit concerned. We weren't sure if we should alert the authorities, but it seems there is either an effort to bury the trolls or we have a very alien form of flora arriving on our beaches. It would have been one thing if it were a one-time sighting, but there were two such scenes, about 25 yards apart. It made me a little leery. We turned back soon after. We'll keep you updated if we find anything suspicious.

Big 'Buts and Sweet Cheeks! The Perfect Day!

This weekend my friend, Ryan Klawitter, took us halibut fishing in his 20' Bayrunner. The weather was beautiful and the water was calm. He took us to a spot that was surrounded by mountains and sheltered from the breezes. Even if it's windy, it's calm back where he fishes.

Melissa caught a halibut within 5 minutes! It was a small "chicken", so we let it go, but it was a sign of what was to come. In all we caught a dozen halibut (kept our limit of 2 each), and several gray cod. Before the day was over, we both had 40 lb. halibut in the boat! Melissa hooked one fish that stripped line off the reel and escaped within 20 feet of the boat. We can only guess that he weighed between 50 and 75 lbs. We also saw sea otters, jumping salmon, and lots of jellyfish.

This was an Irish Lord that Melissa caught. It's a fish that is all head, mouth, and tail. Not a keeper!

After the fishing slowed down and we'd caught our limit, Ryan took us sightseeing. He then took us down a bay that had a gorgeous waterfall!

After the filleting was finished, we put over 60 lbs. of Halibut in the freezer. And, if you want any, you have to come up here to get it!
Thanks, Ryan!
